Shelter Island is a tiny town on the far eastern end of Long Island. Although it is small, it is absolutely divine. You can get there by ferry from Sag Harbor, in the Hamptons. Shelter Island is very under developed and laid back. This is why it has some of the prettiest beaches and swimming coves in the area. It is surrounded with old fashioned, vintage looking homes and is full of beautiful, bright, green tress. One of the important things you must do in Shelter Island is take a stroll through town. It is really quite the experience. It is so small and simplistic, it almost seems like Shelter Island is right out of a storybook. The town has only a few shops such as, antique shops, coffee shops and a few nearby restaurants. However, the local ice cream shop has some of the most delicious ice cream I have ever tasted and is definitely worth stopping by.

The next place you should visit in Shelter Island is the yacht club. The yachts, which come into Shelter Island, are some of the most beautiful in the world. You are able to eat lunch or dinner at the yacht club as well. However, if you are not interested in dining there you can just stop by and stroll down the dock and take a look at some of these gorgeous yachts in this little local town. Here is a website, if you want to learn more about the Shelter Island Yacht Club, http://www.siyc.com/

Lastly, you must go to one restaurant on Shelter Island. I would recommend going for dinner because you can watch the sunset go down. The food here is to die for.  The name of this place fits it perfectly, Sunset Beach. However, the reason that you must visit Sunset Beach goes way beyond just the food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is unlike anything you have ever seen. The restaurant is right out on the beach, looking at the shimmering water all around you. Check it out: http://www.sunsetbeachli.com/restaurant.html. This great restaurant will be the perfect ending memory for your trip to Shelter Island.

Don’t know if you made it to The Dory on Shelter Island, but I’ve just posted a piece about my summer working there and living on the island: http://mindofamaniac.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/a-sheltered-summer/
Hope I captured the, ehm, ‘strangeness’ of shelter Island appropriately!
